THE STORY OF SAFFRON EYECARE
1st July 1996 signified the opening of SAFFRON EYECARE. Previous to this the property was run as a greengrocers. Brian Fox Opticians had closed down on Saffron Lane a few years prior, leaving no accessible eyecare for the immediate community.
Riyaz (formerly of Evington Eyecare) + his brother Rizwan started the practice with the help of Glenis who came over from Keith Ward opticians on Narborough Road. Glenis had been in Optics since 1971. Gill joined in August 1999, having come over from Harveys Optical in Nottingham Road. Again she started her Optical journey in back in 1973. Both Glenis and Gill brought a wealth of experience forming the backbone & were the foundations to the practice until joint retirement in Dec 2014.
We felt we could offer something different to the local community. Our mission was simple - to provide quality eyecare at an affordable price.
During the initial start up Rizwan was still working part time for Dollond + Aitchison Opticians (now Boots), but as we got busier by 2000 he was dedicating full time work to Saffron Eyecare.
As an independent practice, we pride ourselves on our excellent customer service and we offer a friendly and professional experience for all of our clients.
As a child friendly store we carry a wide range of children's frames and we enjoy making the examinations fun and interactive for our younger patients. There is so much more to your eye examination at Saffron Eyecare than finding out if you require spectacles or contact lenses.
Rizwan has been the optometrist here since we first opened over 29 years ago, and it is his passion for promoting good eye health, as well as the friendly and approachable support staff, that keeps our customers coming back year after year.
MEET THE TEAM
Rizwan (BSc (Hons) MCOptom) is our primary Optometrist here at Saffron Eyecare. Over the years, he has provided exceptional eye care to the local community, earning a loyal patient base. Outside the practice, he is an avid cyclist who has ridden extensively across Europe and the Middle East, including France, Italy, Germany, Luxembourg, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, the UAE, and Qatar, raising funds for international and local charities such as LOROS Hospice, Help the Homeless Leicester, and Rainbows Hospice.

Jess is the practice manager and has worked at Saffron Eyecare for 18 years. She has completed the WCSM Level 3 Optical Practice Support Course and as such is very knowledgeable about the types of optical lenses and contact lenses available and enjoys helping the customers find the best pair of spectacles for their needs. Jess is our children's eyewear specialist, with extensive knowledge of specialist children's frames and lenses.
Outside of work Jess enjoys taking Pilates classes, and is involved in several local book clubs to indulge her love of reading.
Sarah relocated to Leicester from Stafford over eight years ago and has 25 years experience in the independent optical industry which she has brought with her to Saffron Eyecare. She has completed the WCSM Level 2 Optical Practice Support course, and is always interested in learning more about new technologies and products on the market. Sarah always has a smile on her face and loves a chat with the customers. Sarah is a big football fan and as a Leicester City season ticket holder she regularly attends matches with her husband.
Mary (our admin guru) joined the team in 2018. She ran a successful business in the local area for 20 years before deciding on a change of pace and career. Outside of work Mary enjoys socialising and spending time with her many grandchildren.
Jerry our purr-fect Quality Control Manager at Saffron Eyecare. With her keen feline instincts, she ensures that every detail is meticulously checked. She's always on the prowl for quality, and you could say she’s got a nose for perfection, ensuring everything is up to scratch With Jerry around, we always know you’re in good paws!
